Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, Isle of Lewis

Tours which may visit a blackhouse:

6 Day Hebridean Explorer

9 Day Island Hopper

Native to the Outer Hebrides, blackhouses are no longer used as a place to live. However with the help of funding the Gearrannan village has been brought back to life by brilliant reconstruction. Right on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean it is almost too beautiful to believe.

The inside of the Taigh Lata (the dormitory style house that we stay in) has been fitted with comfy beds, great showers, well-equipped kitchen and a peat fire! You really feel as though you are experiencing a bit of how they once lived (up until only 50years ago!) and that you are having an insight into the island way of life.

There is wildlife all around and superb coastal walks to be had. You will also have a chance to wander around the reconstructed museum there.

This is a genuine jewel and we are the only backpacker company to have the privilege of staying here. This is an opportunity not to be missed - check which tours Wild In Scotland have use of this location!
