5 Day Orkney Tour Questions

January 14th, 2010

Submitted by: David N. Berger

Hello folks!

I recently had a WONDERFUL tour with Martin exploring the Highlands and Orkney. It was exceptional,  free flowing, great company and Martin’s experience and route was spectacular to say the least. My brother and I deeply enjoyed the trip and can’t wait to come back and see even more.

Is it possible to get Martin’s five day itinerary? A listing of the places we visited and major cities so I can retrace our trip in my journal and not misspell everything  (even just the big spots along the way). I know we visited a lot of places not listed on the normal five day Orkney tour and we saw so much that it’s hard to keep everything straight!

Thanks kindly,

David N. Berger.

P.S. Martin was an excellent guide for us. We really enjoyed his tour. Please forward our thanks to him.

Hi,

Taking that trip to the Isle of Skye last weekend was absolutely the best thing I could have done! Thank you for a lovely time.
It was nice to be on a tour that didn’t include tourist shops and all that kind of stuff. The whole trip was well planned and organized.
Your house in Stromeferry is a dream! And Gordon and his stories about vikings were fascinating.

And Danny! Yes Danny, he is some character! I really enjoyed his enthusiasm of telling stories.  It was like he was telling them for the first time and for you only! That is a talent!  I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in a movie or in theatre one day. . .The stories were fascinating and his knowledge of the history good. He made it all sound  interesting so much as that I decided to go and buy a book and learn more.
I also admired his way to cope with those giggling girls. His was a friend and was joking with them but never on any circumstances did he cross the line of being professional. Not an easy thing to do. I know from my job. I hope you know what kind of treasure you have in him. . .

If I can find a job and  get cheap accommodation in Scotland,  and be able to stay here ’till the end of March as I have planned, I would like to go on another tour of yours. And definitely,  I will advertise you to all my friends. Actually,  I did already yesterday! So if you start to get middle-aged women  from Finland attending your tours,  you can only blame me!

Thanks again and every best wish for 2009 to all of you!

Sari

Hallo Kirsty,

I was on  a tour of the Western Isles in late July/early August with Danny as our tour guide. It was great to do a tour where the number of days were really full (some tours count day 1 as having a meeting at night and breakfast as the last day). Booking was easy.  I did it by internet. It was good to have the calendar to see what tours were booked and what dates were still available. Also,  it was  good to be only 16 of us.

Danny was great fun and cute in his kilt and head band (I can say that as I am old enough to be a grandmother). I particularly appreciated his knowledge of Scottish history and his enthusiasm for telling the stories at each site  and his strong allegiance to Scotland and all things Scottish. (He made sure we had the opportunity to try black pudding,  haggis and treated us to a strong very peaty whisky).  Even in pouring rain,  he made sure we got the history.

Danny also did what he could to meet our requests for extra activities such as visiting a whisky distillery, swimming in the Atlantic Ocean,  Loch Ness and cruising through Manish.

I was really pleased to get the history of Bannockburn (it was not on the brochure I had) as well as the one at Culloden. There was time for me to nip into information centres at various sites to buy history brochures etc. At other places there was time to explore interests in greater detail. I will go back to most of the places we visited. The tour was a great introduction to the Western Isles and Scotland.

The hostels were good, had great locations, superb views (particularly when we had them to ourselves but ok  if we did not), they were clean and  comfortable. A treat when our beds had been made for us and it was good to stay at private hostels (i.e. not SYHAs). I particularly liked the Blackhouses. Two nights in the one place was good. My least favourite was the one near Loch Ness.

What I would change is the system for food. There was, to me, an enormous wastage of food (and our kitty money). Over catering and making dishes that many people did not eat. We did tend to eat late at night. Partly because we had such full touring days  but mainly because we are not experienced caterers so too much food was being cooked. People also snacked during the day and while waiting for the meal so were not that hungry. Two people seemed to do mostly their own catering. One evening meal in a local pub was a treat.

I suggest a  guide on how much to buy e.g. 60-70 grams dried pasta / dried rice per person, 44  grams for mince, number of slices of bacon etc. Also, before buying,  get actual numbers of how many people eat cereal, bacon, will try black pudding  etc. The tour guide could have a standard box of basics – tea,  coffee, sugar,  olive oil, tomato sauce, salt, pepper etc.  It was awful to see the other tour guide throwing out good food. Even leaving it at the hostel for other travellers would have been better, although I suspect may not have been used and would’ve been eventually thrown out. Even offer it to those on the tour as many of us were self catering / staying in hostels.

I would do another Wild Tour and enjoyed the company of young people. Recommend you to young people and those over 40 who would enjoy adventurous basic small group travel and being with young people.

Best wishes to Danny and all At Wild in Scotland.

Regards,
Anne

3 day tour

Hi Kirsty (and Kath,  or whoever else may be reading this email!)
My phone has been causing a fair amount of grief with telstar not allowing me to recharge due to an expiry date issue on my credit card. The joys of dealing with large companies from afar!

So I’ve been meaning to send a note of appreciation for the past few days.  I  figured last week was your winding down/ organising parties etc. It all sounded quite hectic from what I could gather.

Anyway, a brief note to say a mighty thanks for the 3 day trip to Skye.  It was a stack of great value and possibly the highlight of my time  since I left Oz.

Please pass on my thanks to Ewan for his efforts and tell him that I took his advice and headed up to Inverness/Ullapool last weekend.  I got saturated on the Saturday afternoon a couple of times but rewarded on Sunday morning up on Stac Pollaidh.

Trust all is good and I look forward to catching up in Edinburgh one weekend down the track.

Cheers,

Justin.

Hello
I’m Rebekka holder and I’ve just come back from the monster tour.  I just wanted to say thank you for the great time I had. It is just an awesome concept of travelling (the social aspect of it with the cooking and stuff, the interesting stories, jokes and historical facts told by both of the drivers,  the adventures, the landscape and so on).  I absolutely loved it!
Unfortunately I didn’t  get to say goodbye to our second driver Bruce (I don’t know his last name). Since I don’t  have his email address, could you please forward this onto him? I’d be very grateful.

Hey Bruce,
Sorry we didn’t say goodbye. We were picked up by our friends as you were still gone. I just wanted to say “hi!”  real quick and thank you for the great time we had with you. I really appreciated you knowing so much about the history of Scotland and the different places we went to. It really made me feel that I got to know Scotland, even just in these couple of days. Oh,  and you are a great story teller!  I hope we didn’t bother you to much with asking for more stories (hehe). They were just to much fun. I can say that this was probably one of my best vacations. I won’t forget it (and for sure it made me want to go back to Scotland). Thanks to wild in Scotland, yourself  and Danny.
So thanks again and take care
Rebekka Hodler (in case you don’t remember. . swiss girl, ginger hair, don’t like to wear hats but looooove stories!).

Hi Kath,

We’ve just been coming up with some good feedback for you!

The kitty is such a good idea for making things simpler. It only took 10 minutes to pick up food for breakfast and dinner and then you didn’t have to worry about the hassle of splitting costs or anything later on.

The house; we were blown away with how nice it was.  It was in the perfect location and had everything. Stove fire, nice big kitchen, lovely bedrooms and Gordon! We thought it was really good that everyone got to stay together and have dinner together. We know that with some other companies the group is split but eating together made it so much easier to get to know everyone.

The tour; one day did not seem long enough on Skye! We were pretty lucky with the weather so we actually got a lot of time off the bus to go walking. We also had quite a lot of freedom in choosing where to go on Skye. No one had any particular places they wanted to visit but Danny kept asking to see if we wanted to do this or that so it felt a bit less like we were on a strict itinerary.

The guide; we all thought Danny was  brilliant. He was really good at relaxing people and playing games to get everyone talking. He is obviously very passionate about Scotland and the history. We had lots of stops and he always had a wee story for every place. He was also extremely enthusiastic about everything. Walking,  getting off the bus as much as possible, involving people and dressing up etc.

Let us know if you want us to go into more detail with anything but we really struggled to think of any negative feedback!

Regards,
Morna and Jenni

Dear WiS Folks,

I’m now back in the states and i have unfortunately settled into my daily work routine. But I wanted to take a moment to express what a wonderful and exciting time I had on both the 9 Day Island Hopper tour  with Colin and Bruce and the 2Day Loch Ness and Highlands tour with Bruce and Danny. All three gentleman were top notch and I’d travel with any and all of them in the future. Why two tours? The first was a birthday present to myself to fill out the majority of my homecoming 2009 trip. And the second was to make sure my brothers who joined me later in the trip, got a chance to see as much of the country as possible on their shortened schedule.

Every day of both tours was about as packed with history, lore, landscapes and good will as could be asked for. People have been asking me what the best part was and I’m honestly unable to come up with any point where one moment superseded any other. I’m partial to hiking through The Quiraing during a storm but that may just be because those are the photos that I’m currently editing. I’ve already recommended WiS to two groups of friends who will be in Scotland over the next few months. In particular, I’d like to commend Colin and his leadership during the first half of  the 9 Day tour. Keeping a van load of outgoing and opinionated individuals going in roughly the same direction 24 hours a day is an amazing feat. I lead much smaller groups on day and overnight  hikes into Adirondack and Catskill Mountains and really appreciated Colin’s handling of both the mundane and the extraordinary aspects of the trip, especially when one of our members became seriously ill. He’s  a great  asset to WiS and hope he’ll be available when my friends book their tours.

Thank you again for providing such a wonderful experience.

Sandor

Hi,

I would just like to take the time to feed back on my experiences of Scotland…I t is an amazing country with an incredible history. Both guides …danny and jamie had very good history information and the design of the trip was brilliantly designed to complete a cirle of historic events……Jamie was one of the best guides i have had in 10 years of traverlling with a variety of companies and if it were my company he would be my guide trainer…. His mannerism and thoughtfullness of each and evry passenger is highly co mendable. His driving was executed to passenger comfort…and safety was always of upmost importance….Only recommendtion tha ti have is thqt he briefly meets the 9 dcay pax and gives the a brief run down of the days activities upon joining and perhaps invites them for breakfast….the kitty on his part of the trip was a hugh diffence with enough money to go out for dinner on th elast night and as well have (pounds)8.20 remaining and the food we had and the quantities was equal to if not more thqan the first 5 days.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Danny for the first 2 days was also brilliant and then something happened, he got extemely streessed …he was worried that people were not having a good time but they certainly were, he appeared to not be real sure about how may nights we were staying and we seemed to go around the island of lewis a few times with a lot of back tracking. the upcoming visit of his girlfriend saw him off with the fairies, especially the last couple of days….from the itinery i believed that we would be visiting the harris weaving as part of our trip not having to pay more for it…2.40pounds is not much ( $ NZ6) which all adds up…for dinner on night 5 he asked what we wanted to cook or go out…i think he could have better advised us as in stornoway ther ewas a lot more food options to do our own thing as opposed to our 5th night stay…very limited and by the time we got in some places had closed….lot of people not happy about it…..we got back 5.50pounds but incomparison for what we did and ate it is a hugh differnce to the last 4 dsays….He didn’t tell us about the lock ness or that Urqurt castle was visitable at night, even though i had a ripped achilles tendons i would have like to have the information… thanks to the efforts trying to get acupuncture….
I am glad the tour went they way it did, i would have been dissappointing for the it to have been the rev ersal…..Danny could perhaps slow down as we were getting flung around..and not because of the bumping road that we were on..just more comfortable….
As a driver/guide of 8 years, in various countries and styles of tours i know that with out feed back nothing will change…. Danny has a lot of potential and i hope that in the future his mind is on the job and not the flight arrivaling at the end of it…
I have a enjoyed the variety of what you have been able to cram into 9 days and was happy that we had a few days of scottish weather….
thsnk you

regards sue corbett
